Polemerous was made entirely on an early version of Logic audio while I was in Sydney working on a project for the Sydney Olympics - so slightly later than the 90’s but close enough to include in that collection.
They way I got these sounds was to use one of Logic’s built-in software synths to generate the analogue ish sounds, to which I applied lots of heavy eq to dramatically sculpt and alter the sounds. They took on a metallic flavour with that high harmonic that is prominent on the sounds and which I think was also a result of the heavy eqs. There may have been heavy layers of compression used too. The reverb was Logic’s own early reverb - nothing special - but I think that if you sculpt it to suit the sound it can end up sounding nice and rich as it supports the sound.
I needed to come up with the composition quite quickly, so I made bold moves I normally wouldn’t make. I think there are some granular synthesis sounds in there too!
So, quite ordinary techniques and sound sources used - nothing fancy - but heavily applied.
Very difficult to pick an absolute favorite, close to half the artists I was previously familiar and the others quickly becoming new favorites. Excellent compilation of Australian electronic & ambient music of varying styles but curated and organized to create an exceptionally varied and pleasing listening experience. Anthony Childs
