Vanishing Tekopia continues the ensembles love of the exotic. Singers Joanne and Melissa took weeks to master a specially devised phonetic language that works musically rather than as a text.

"The CD is mesmerising and surprising. One minute you want to drift off to an exotic, less frenzied place and the next it grabs your attention with its own frenzy, making you sit up and wonder. It’s not easy listening yet in the next instant it becomes heartbreakingly lyrical and beautiful..." Arts Hub

about

The title alludes to an actual island in the South Pacific Ocean that is in danger of being swamped by the rising ocean. However, the title also refers to the many pockets of indigenous and sub-urban cultures that are continually being absorbed into more dominant cultures.
Vanishing Tekopia has undergone a similar process. The music has appropriated and absorbed fragments of music derived from many sources.

The vocalists Melissa and Joanne took it upon themselves to learn written notations of phonetics with variations set to music. I wanted to use the voice as an instrument rather than to convey specific meanings through lyrics. The words themselves have no specific meaning, although they hint at things.

This music would not have been possible without the dedication of the ensemble musicians who have spent time coming to terms with the often tricky and complex performance requirements that lurk beneath the music.
