about

These pieces occupy quite a different sonic universe to most of my music up to this point (1990). These ambient soundscapes were composed for an exhibition entitled The Hi-Tech Garage for the Technology Centre of Silicon Valley, San Jose, California, USA.

The soundscapes draw on early PC programs like Sound Globs and Sequencer Plus controlling an Emax sampler and Sony digital reverb which were compiled onto 16 track tape.
They were created in my time working for the pioneering soundscape exhibition design company Sound Design Studio, that was based in Melbourne, Australia. Other projects included the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, nature soundscapes for the Biosphere 2 project, the Osaka Aquarium, Japan and San Diego Zoo.

Designed by Twelve Tone Systems, Sound Globs was an algorithmic composition program - one of the very few for the PC. It generated interesting pitch and duration sets based around various controllable parameters. It was a good basis for generating material that was developed further through Sequencer Plus's midi editing capabilities.

Back then it was written...
"Sound Globs requires an IBM PC or compatible, a MPU401 MIDI interface (or compatible) and 560K of free RAM (it can't use extended or expanded memory). It supports Hercules, EGA, VGA and CGA graphic cards, although not with the low resolution of 320 x 200. A hard disk is an advantage, as with most things PC."
